Rozhovor Then Comes Silence

Sanctuary.cz: We last spoke in connection with the release of album „Blood“ four years ago. What significant changes have been in your life since then? Firstly, the line-up of the band comes to my mind…
JONAS: Yes we have two new guitarist since 'Blood'. Seth and Jens were to busy with their lives unfortunately. But we are super happy with Hugo and Mattias, we are now better than ever!
ALEX: 'Blood' opened up doors for the band. More shows, new followers and bigger festivals. That means more work and commitment from all the members. That's why the former guitarists couldn't keep pace with Then Comes Silence.

Sanctuary.cz: You released your new album on new label SPV/Oblivion. What was the reason for this change?
ALEX: Music business is very uncertain and unpredictable today. Suddenly the owners sell their shares and the new owners change the agenda of the company. Unless you are the moneymaker of a label you're mostly likely to be disposed. And of course, as an artist you want to work with people who really care about the band, so sometimes you change team.

Sanctuary.cz: New album „Machine“ was released the same week as Covid-19 outbreak occurred in Europe. This wasn‘t the best coincidence, right?
HUGO: No, it was an awful coincidende, it's difficult to promote a new album, that took months to make, if you're forced to cancel / postpone the tour.
JONAS: No, it wasn't. We made a release show in Stockholm the day before lockdown basically. It was tough and annoying that we had to cancel the whole tour for Machine. But now we start to see the light in the tunnel and we will be back on the road again!

Then Comes Silence - In Your Name

Sanctuary.cz: Nicklas Stenemo, who played two years ago with Kite at PGT, appears as guest on your album in track "In Your Name". How did this collaboration come about? Did he tell you anything about our festival?
ALEX: We're friends for a long time. He's got that special tone in his voice that was meant to be on that track along with a handful more songs on 'Machine'. He might have told us about PGT.... When we meet we talk about everything. I know they played there before.

Sanctuary.cz: Has anyone from the band contracted coronavirus?
HUGO: I got Covid in march 2020. There wasn't too much information at the time so i wasn't sure about what i had, for me it was like a strange flu. A couple of months later the antibodies test confirmed it was covid.

Sanctuary.cz: What did coronavirus take away from you and what did it give you in return? What most important points would you mention?
MATTIAS: It took away plenty for a lot of people but for the band it was the opportunity for a release tour in close proximity to the release of “Machine”. It gave us a new perspective of how much we enjoy live shows and it also gave us the opportunity to try out different ways of promotion for the album.  Online festivals, Live streams and more focus on the music videos.
HUGO: It took my lifestyle away. It's hard to say that it gave anything in return, but to say something, i guess we were forced to hit the brakes, and learn to be more patient and take things easier.

Sanctuary.cz: You did live stream gigs, you participated in online shows such as Gothicat Festival. How did you like this online version of otherwise face-to-face events and do you think it would still make sense to do something from those online tools in future as well, when the situation hopefully returns to normal (more or less)?
HUGO: Stream gigs and online shows have been great during these recent times. I prefer to play real shows but i really enjoy watching live streams from other bands at home. Both things should coexist in the future. MATTIAS: From my point of view it sucked. I love the energy that performing in front of a live audience will give you and to be without an actual audience just makes me more focused on playing the songs instead of performing the songs if you know what I mean.

Sanctuary.cz: What did it feel like to play in front of the festival audience again at Castle Party few weeks ago?
MATTIAS: It felt like a comeback, like something have been missing for a long time and you finally get a taste of it again. I don’t know if I have the eyes of a 80 year old or if it was of happiness but my left eye was tearing the whole show, felt like a dried up tomato afterwards.
HUGO: Felt amazing, like we were back in 2019. I'm very much looking forward to PGT.

Then Comes Silence - When You´re Gone

Sanctuary.cz: Few weeks ago, you released new song "When You’re Gone". What inspired the making of this track? Does it signify the arrival of new album?
JONAS: The song was written for "Machine" but didn't make it to the album. We still like the song and we wanted to release it as a stand alone single, between albums. We are working on a new album though.
ALEX: The track didn't fit in with the rest of the album because of it's sound. We felt we wanted to save it for another day.

Sanctuary.cz: In interview for portal https://elgarajedefrank.es/  few months ago, you talked about postponement of the upcoming album. What caused the release of new songs to be postponed?
ALEX: Uhu, that album wasn't postponed. It was rejected. It will never see the light. I listened to it's demo last Winter and I'm certain it was a very good decision to scrap it. It was a weird concept album and difficult to realize.

Sanctuary.cz: In the last interview for Sanctuary.cz, Alex stated the band always only went through Czech Republic till now. This year, you’re finally going to perform here. What do you expect from the weekend in Prague at PGT?
MATTIAS:
I expect one fantastic festival with wonderful festival attendees and we will bring fantastic music performed for you all.
JONAS: We have never played in Prague before and we are looking forward to it! It will be amazing!
